About Four Pillars

In short: Four Pillars is an independent website that explains Chinese BaZi (Four Pillars of Destiny) astrology in English, Japanese, Korean and Chinese. The birth chart calculator is free and runs entirely in your browser. Everything here is for entertainment and self-reflection.

本站What we do

BaZi reads a birth date and time as eight Chinese characters: a Heavenly Stem and an Earthly Branch for the year, month, day and hour. Most English sources stop at the zodiac animal. We show the whole chart, explain the Day Master, the Five Elements balance and the Ten Gods in plain language, and publish free guides to the 10 Day Masters, zodiac compatibility, the 2027 Fire Goat year, a monthly horoscope and every zodiac year since 1930.

方法How charts are calculated

• Year pillar: changes at Lichun, the start of spring (solar longitude 315°), not at Chinese New Year, following standard BaZi practice.
• Month pillars: follow the 12 solar “jie” terms, with month stems from the Five Tigers rule.
• Day pillar: counted from the Julian Day Number in the unbroken 60-day cycle. Births from 23:00 count as the next day.
• Hour pillar: two-hour branches, with stems from the Five Rats rule. The chart uses standard clock time in the time zone you choose; it does not apply true solar time correction.
• Sun position: Jean Meeus's low-precision solar formula, accurate to about 15 minutes.
• Interpretations: based on classical BaZi concepts (Day Master strength, balancing element, Ten Gods, luck cycles) written as general guidance. Charts with similar structures receive similar text.

Chinese New Year dates come from calendar tables based on Hong Kong Observatory data. The full table is published as open data and on GitHub.
